[Requiem for a Jedi]

Anakin Skywalker was a rogue. Exiled. Stripped of his title and honor. And it was his own fault, actually. He was reckless. He was reckless, and so they rejected him. The only thing left supporting him now was his mind, and that was unreliable at best.

He traveled through many systems across the galaxy, ragged Jedi robes on his back, a lightsaber in one hand, and a rucksack in the other. He hadn’t seen decent civilization in almost a year, but that was hardly unexpected. There are few places a reckless ex-Jedi is readily accepted.

So, with no hope and little water, Anakin pushed on against the desert. Each day he continued to live was a surprise. He had prepared himself for death, but again, that was hardly unexpected either. He hadn’t anticipated surviving more than a week on Tatooine anyway.

He hadn’t expected to survive because They were out to kill him. He wasn’t exactly sure who They were, but he knew the only people who wanted him dead were Jedi or Sith. They’d managed to trap him. Corner him. Corner him like an animal for slaughter on a godforsaken back-water planet in some derelict system at the edge of the galaxy.

And it was his own fault, really.

This was why it came as no surprise that he pushed on against a desert that seemed so determined to resist him. This was why it came as no surprise that he struggled through thirst and hunger and sandstorms. This was why it came as no surprise that he slept with his back to the rock and his lightsaber clenched in his fist.

This was why it came as no surprise that he died a week later, his lightsaber two inches from his outstretched, bloody hand.
